OpenSim drops the 6 month viewer barrier, adds CLAs

Hi folks,

The plan to establish a Contributor’s License Agreement for OpenSimulator that I wrote about previously is now complete.  You can read more details on the OpenSimulator Contributions Policy wiki page, which has links to the process necessary to submit an agreement and the FAQ.

This agreement doesn’t currently apply to all patches – just those which implement new features or are greater than 100 lines in length.

This means that we are now dropping the clause that forbids contributions from anybody who has studied Second Life viewer code or downstream viewer projects in the last 6 months.  I can go and read and contribute to viewer projects now, and they can contribute patches to us (or even potentially become core members) if they ever wish :-)

I’m hoping that over time this will improve co-operation between OpenSimulator and viewer projects, and lead to new and exciting features!

Once these changes have bedded in, which will take a while, we can get on with the process of establishing more parts of the Overte Foundation.

    That’s wonderful news, Justin!

We are jumping and rejoicing in the regions!

There such potential for new features and fixes with this newly combined effort, pooling expertise and enthusiasm.

Often, it seems that viewer code is one of the first doors one enters when the spark of interest is ignited.

ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Justin Clark-Casey, an OpenSim core developer and professional software engineer.

On the Linden Lab grid I go by the name of Lulworth Beaumont. On other grids I'm just plain old Justin Clark-Casey.

I'm currently working as a freelance consultant specializing in OpenSimulator and related technologies. If you're interested in learning more then please read the Hire Me page.

I've also written a paper on distributed virtual environments, which examines how virtual worlds could become more like the web, rather than individual silos of users and content.

I often attend the OpenSim Office Hours on a Tuesday on Wright Plaza at OSgrid.org
