This Week in OpenSim Dev – week ending Saturday 3rd April 2010

The changes described here appear only in OpenSim’s cutting edge Git ‘master’ branch. Please do not attempt to use code taken directly from ‘master’ in any production environment. At particular points in time this in-development code may not work or may even cause data corruption. If you are not a developer or tester, please treat this summary instead as a preview of what will be coming up in the next release. The latest official release is OpenSim 0.6.8 (released on 23rd December 2009).

This week in OpenSim ( 607ed6 – e6ed9b ).

General news

  • The cutting edge OpenSim Git master code is still unstable following the final merge of the ROBUST server migration on the 1st March 2010.  I very strongly recommend that you don’t update to this code unless you are a developer or tester – please stick with official releases such as OpenSim 0.6.8.  If you do need to update, here are some work-in-progress migration instructions.

Features & bug fixes

  • I made a change so that it’s now impossible for a server to send a full object update packet to a viewer after an object deletion packet.  This prevents deleted prims from ever hanging around as ghosts – prims that remain around until relog but have no owner or creator and cannot be manipulated (696d71).
  • Melanie committed code developed by TomMeta of Meta7 that allows scripts to set WindLight parameters for a region.  This is currently only supported by the Meta7 viewer (21519d).
  • I committed a fix which stops any attempt to write out empty byte arrays when saving OpenSim Archives (OARs) or Inventory Archives (IARs).  This may allow successful saves even where some asset data is missing.  I believe this situation was quite rare and should not affect many people (2bf176).
  • jhurliman stopped acknowledgements being append to zero coded packets.  This may cut down some sim -> viewer resend traffic (35c82a).

Infrastructure

  • Nothing major to report this week.

    Yay for finishing what LL started with Windlight! I hear from jacek that Imprudence has plans to support this as well.

    @Marcus. Cool.

    What I hope to see one day is the interface for features like this clearly written down in the OpenSimulator wiki when they get into a release. One can dream :)
