Thanks James :) I'm now wondering whether to do the same this year (be accurate but possibly boring) or go for something headline grabbing but possibly inaccurate. Chances are I'll go the accurate route...

Good list! :-)

And I hope I can somehow help to add some real openness to OpenSim by helping implement prototypes standard web protocols such as OAuth, OpenSocial and so on. Being able to e.g. use avatars not managed by an OpenSim server but by e.g. some OpenSocial server might be very interesting as then you could easily let people from other social networks log in to OpenSim.

OpenId consumer support would of course also be great but will mean changes to the client. As Linden Lab seems to be opposed to OpenID for reasons not publically known (to me at least) this has to come from the community though. I still hope we will arrive at that point someday though.

I told you not to waste all that time on creating protocols with Linden. Did you think they would have opened the gates to let their customers flow to opensim grids? Opensim is doing very well as an entity by itself. It gets more and more support and the project already showed it doesn't need large companies to succeed or depend on Linden to become a success.
I was on OSgrid a little while ago and I noticed how people are turning it into Second Life, I saw identical scenery at some points, it doesn't have the designer stores but it does have the creativity.

Keep thinking about drifting further and further away from Second Life by experimenting with new technology, let the developers pay attention to new viewers and come up with new ideas for modules.
Don't let it bother you certain people come into the IRC channel telling you how horrible it is they just downloaded trunk and it doesn't work. Keep working like you always did in the past, it's about people making an open source virtual world platform.

Get rid of bugs, we all want that, inventory needs to load and when you rez something it has to be there. Working teleports and not drifting out are the biggest concern for many I think. I know these things are hard to fix so let us hope they dissapear in 2009.

My feeling from the OGP Gridnauts project was that people got very excited at the beginning and wrongly assumed that the 'aim' of the OGP was to enable an avatar to TP between SL and OS, and have their appearance and inventory intact at the destination. When it was apparent that this would not be the case, following very stiff opposition from premium content providers in SL (concerned that their creations would get out into the 'wild'), I saw a marked reduction in enthusiasm, particularly in the Gridnauts group chat.

I think the challenges posed by alternative VWs to SL and OS should also be taken into account. While I do not think that Sony's Home poses much of a threat, I really do fear that if Blue Mars gets off the ground it will have a serious impact. Side-by-side SL looks amateurish in comparison, so I think the interest will be enormous. The danger it poses will be based on their final business model.

Great blog, keep up the good work.
