[...] Nonetheless, I’m always fascinated to hear of how people are experimenting with OpenSim and other virtual environments, with an eye to using them to achieve their goals. For instance, it was great yesterday to read Paul Sweeney’s report on a lessons-learned meeting for UK-funded virtual-world education projects, a meeting at which OpenSim was mentioned quite a few times. Among other things, this adds to the discussions of emerging educational VE uses in last month’s UK Virtual World Watch report and to the earlier activites in this space.
Dependent of funding we're also looking into the possibility of building a virtual retirement village in Opensim as part of a project focused on using telepresence and virtual-presence to alleviate loneliness among the marginalized elderly in our society (in Ireland).

@ Mr Nicoll

Underfunded and no time allocation - tell me about it :-) Best of luck with getting funding - I look forward to hearing about your experiences if you blog about them.

@ Ai Austin

Ah, I thought you were doing some work in this area (from your OpenSim mailing list posts) but I didn't know the links. Interesting stuff - that gives some context to the technical discussions.

@ dave cormier

Thanks for the compliment :-) There is quite a lot of experimental stuff going on out there - I think the non-grid applications are particularly interesting since it's an area where OpenSim can provide things (such as security and extensibility) that a server on the Linden Labs grid cannot.

I'll pass on your e-mail address to Mr Nicholl.

Hey Justin,

That Particular blog post (referenced to my blog above) was actually related to the livingarchives project and the later opensim posts on my blog are openhabitat. I went to opensim with L.A. after getting 'mixed messages' from LL regarding my ability to get a private, safe island for our PEI 7th and 8th graders.

Opensim has been a fantastic experience, and I really only turned to it last year when Ian Truelove mentioned it as an option, so we used it for LA and it's inclusion in openhabitat was a no brainer considering the advantages of having control over your own server.

great write up

As part of the "Virtual University of Edinburgh" (Vue) - http://vue.ed.ac.uk/ - we have Second Life regions and an experimental Opensim-based set of regions called "Open Vue" - http://vue.ed.ac.uk/openvue/

You can see some images and the map of the regions fed live from our servers at the above URL. Current use is mainly for research on collaboration centres for emerhency response - and the I-Room - room for intelligent interaction - see http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/project/i-room/

A number of regions have been set up for experiments in the School of Informatics and in the School of Education to date.

You might be interested to know there's a small group of us at the University of St Andrews trying to bring up an OpenSim service for UK educational use. We're unfunded and have no time allocation, so it's currently on a £500 pound "server" sitting under my desk, and gets worked on when I have free time, but we're hoping to actually get some funding later in the year.
