Firstly, just to make things clear, I speak only for myself. Other OpenSim developers may or may not have the same opinions.

Secondly, I have the greatest respect for Linden Labs. Other companies have produced virtual world platforms, but they're the only major company that have had the vision to open source their client and advocate open standards. Indeed, Linden Labs and OpenSim have a pretty good relationship - we know that they've played around with OpenSim and are actively devoting resources to OpenSim/Linden interoperability. An alternative implementation of the Second Life servers strengthens the validity and vitality of the virtual world specifications they are developing.

In the same way, I think that a completely independent viewer implementation would push along the development and documentation of the client - server side of the Second Life protocol. Far from being of detriment to Linden Labs, such independent viewers would improve and further entrench the Second Life ecosystem.

Maybe its some kind of fairness?
SL has done all the design and now opensim wants to have it all without paying back. First they forbid their programmers to contribute back to the viewer, now they want effort spend in a clone instead of improving the open original. Not nice.
